SEKISUI Medical Group is $700+ million is a diverse, global business focused on developing, manufacturing, and marketing in vitro diagnostics and providing drug development and pharmaceutical manufacturing services. It’s facility in the UK (Kent) is focused on growing its biologics CDMO business (BioProduction by SEKISUI) with a cGMP manufacturing expansion, while continuing to manufacture and supply enzymes and raw materials to the IVD industry, which it has been doing for its partners for over 50 years.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Enzyme & BioProduction, the Associate Director, Engineering will be responsible for leading and managing the activities of the Engineering & Maintenance Team with the aim of developing and maintaining facilities, equipment and utilities to operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulatory requirements and meet the needs of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the Engineering & Maintenance Team and establish key processes and practices, including ensuring activities are carried out efficiently and safely
  • Implement maintenance programs, including maintenance outsourcing and computerised maintenance management systems, where applicable, for all equipment and utilities in the manufacturing facility, ensuring applicable regulatory requirements are met
  • Management of engineering & maintenance budgets
  • Management of site capital budget and delivery of significant capital projects
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency and reduce downtime
  • Develop and maintain relationships with equipment suppliers and service providers to ensure that the plant has access to the latest technologies and maintenance services.
  • Manage outside contractors
  • Management of engineering change control process in line with ISO9001 and cGMP principles
  • Management, appraisal and development of engineering & maintenance staff
  • Ensuring that the engineering & maintenance functions are in compliance with relevant HS&E and quality systems
  • Supporting Environmental Management System (EMS) activities and compliance to ISO14001

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

  • Engineering Degree in an appropriate discipline (electrical, instrument or mechanical)
  • Significant experience in Facility, Engineering, and/or Maintenance management in a biotech or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
  • Relevant experience as a Project Engineer on design and construction projects (min £5M)
  • Supervisory experience including management of contractors
  • Experience of working in a heavily regulated industry (eg healthcare, medical devices etc) and good knowledge of cGMP as it applies to engineering and maintenance activities
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering change control
  • Experience of budgetary control (expense & capital)
  • Knowledge of legal/statutory requirements of major projects (CDM, electrical stds etc)
  • Knowledge of biologics process equipment desirable
  • Self-motivated and customer-oriented with ability to inspire and lead others
  • Team player with strong written and verbal communication skills

Ability to manage multiple projects, solve problems, and think and work both tactically and strategically to support the needs of the business
